Getting braces is an exciting step towards achieving a healthy, beautiful smile, but it's also a big adjustment. At Maple Orthodontics, we want to help make the transition as smooth as possible by providing you with all of the information you need on how to care for your braces and what to expect during treatment.

Eating with Braces:

During the first few days of wearing braces, it's normal to experience some discomfort as your teeth adjust to the new pressure. During this time, it's best to eat soft foods that are easy to chew, like soups, mashed potatoes, and smoothies. You should also avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods that could damage your braces, like popcorn, gum, and hard candy.  Foods that are difficult to chew should be cut into small bite-sized pieces and should be chewed upon using a gentle motion.  Sometimes it’s not what you’re eating, but how you’re eating.  Everything in moderation we say.

Brushing and Flossing with Braces:

Proper oral hygiene is crucial during orthodontic treatment to prevent cavities and gum disease. We recommend brushing your teeth after every meal with a high-quality electric toothbrush and flossing or WaterPiking at least once a day. Be sure to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a fluoride toothpaste. Floss threaders and interdental brushes can help you reach those hard to reach areas between the wires and brackets.

Dealing with Discomfort:

It's normal to experience some discomfort or soreness after getting braces or after an adjustment appointment. You can relieve discomfort by rinsing your mouth with warm salt water, using orthodontic wax to cover any areas that are causing irritation, or taking over-the-counter pain medication as directed.

Emergencies:

Although fairly uncommon in our office, If you do experience an orthodontic emergency, like a broken bracket or wire, contact our office right away. We'll work to schedule a same-day appointment to address the issue.
